Massage and the Olympics
The PyeongChang Winter Olympics are well and truly underway now. There has been plenty of thrills, challenges, wins, losses oh and we should also mention the spills!
Ouch! The first thing that runs through my head when an Olympian comes down from their spectacular trick in not quite the right position! But hang on, how do these Olympians manage to continue competing? Some of you might instantly think that they are on pain medication but most of the time these Olympians seek out more natural remedies!

AND GUESS WHAT!! It is just what you seek when you have sore muscles from that extra training session or poor posture at your desk! A MASSAGE!!
Some of you may be interested to learn that each Olympic team actually choose to have at least one of their own massage therapists travel with them.
Surely by now I have you feeling that slight tightness in your neck or that twinge in your back that won’t go away? Why are you waiting? Book a MASSAGE today!
Now massage therapy to us isn’t such a new topic of conversation……. CORRECT? but in the Olympics it is!
Did you know that massage therapy only became an official component of the Olympics in 1996? WHAT THE?? Why did they wait so long? While the concept of massage has been thrown around at the Olympics for a long time this was the first time it had been recognized. To be honest the benefits of massage are still to some extent being understood. It is the advancements in the approach to training and competitor maintenance between competitions that has played a massive part in the increase of performance over the years. These advancements have meant that we have even more Olympians performing at their peak hence the reason they need a quicker recovery! This is where massage comes in!
I know this isn’t in the Olympics we are currently seeing but do you remember the cupping marks all over Michael Phelps at the Rio Olympics? These marks are living proof of effective recovery methods that some Olympians use! They even over shadowed Phelps winning his 19th Gold medal!
How does a massage benefits the Olympians?
As we know massage therapy helps everyone in different ways. But these are just a few
- Massage can help the body to recover quicker
- It keep muscles loose and flexible which allows for maximum performance
- Massage gives some a chance to get back in check with themselves as well (this could be mental or physical)
- Healing in the body is promoted through massage
- Massage helps us to prevent injuries from happening
Ok, so all these fancy words I have just used above is simply what us massage therapists do with you! This must explain why you keep booking those appointments and listening to your body!
OR if you need to start listening to your body why not book a MASSAGE?
While it is possible you are saying ‘I am no Olympian’ you have to remember….. We are all human, we all have bones that keep us functioning, muscles that get sore and massage therapists to help! You don’t have to be skiing the biggest slope or running the longest distances to need a massage! You can see for yourself from the benefits above that MASSAGE is amazing and it does work!
Abby Wambach, a USA 2 time gold medalist has summed massage up perfectly saying that ‘The physical and mental benefits of massage are numerous and it’s something that is not just a luxury, but should be an important part of our lives’.
I am pretty confident that by now you are getting the hint…… right? MASSAGE is amazing!
So what are you waiting for? Don’t wait as long the Olympics to schedule this into your life!
